Pattern or Plain? Style Tips for Petite Women...

When it comes to fashion, the age-old debate between patterns and plain fabrics is always on the table. Do you gravitate towards the simplicity of solid colours, or do you find yourself drawn to the vibrancy of patterns? Both choices offer unique advantages, especially for petite women who want to look stylish and put together.

The Power of a Column of Colour

For many petite women, a column of colour—where an outfit is composed of similar shades from top to toe—is a go-to strategy. This technique helps elongate the body, creating a taller and slimmer silhouette. A monochromatic look is not only flattering but also exudes a polished, cohesive appearance.

However, there are times when you might want to break away from the simplicity of solid colours and introduce some visual interest to your outfit.

Adding Interest with Patterns

If you're a fan of patterns but feel hesitant about incorporating them into your wardrobe, start small. A patterned scarf is an excellent way to add a touch of flair without overwhelming your look. Choose a scarf that includes one of the colours from your outfit for a harmonious feel, or be bold and opt for a contrasting colour to make a statement.

And here’s a style tip: Petite women can indeed pull off larger patterns—especially when worn in a way that doesn’t dominate the entire outfit. A scarf with a large print, for instance, can look fantastic when tied or rolled, adding a pop of personality to your outfit without overpowering your frame. By experimenting with different scarves, you can transform the same outfit in various ways, making your wardrobe more versatile.

Scarves aren’t just for your neck! Try tying one around your handbag handle, threading it through the epaulettes of a trench coat, or even using it as a belt. These small touches can elevate a plain outfit to something special.

Lift a Plain Outfit with Accessories

Another simple way to enhance a solid-coloured outfit is by adding jewellery. A statement necklace, a vintage brooch, or a pair of striking earrings can turn a basic look into something memorable. I once met a woman wearing a fabulous bumblebee brooch—modern, eye-catching, and a great conversation starter!

Remember, dressing in solid colours doesn’t have to be boring. Unique accessories from craft fairs or thrift stores can provide that extra touch of individuality. Keep an eye out for pieces that resonate with your personal style and make your outfit stand out.

A Sneak Peek into Patterns

In my next post, I’ll dive deeper into patterns and how to wear them confidently. But here’s a quick tip: If you’re adding a patterned blouse or top to an otherwise plain outfit, be mindful of the size of the pattern. Large, oversized patterns can sometimes overwhelm petite frames, making you appear smaller than you are.

Choosing Patterns that Suit You

When styling someone, I always consider their features—whether they’re more rounded or angular. Those with rounded features might find that patterns with swirls, circles, and softer shapes complement their natural curves. In contrast, those with more angular features often look great in patterns with straight lines and geometric shapes like stripes or squares. The same logic applies to accessories and even the fabrics you choose; structured materials tend to suit angular features, while flowing fabrics work well with softer, rounded shapes.

The key is to trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Comfort is crucial—there’s nothing worse than feeling uneasy in your clothes.
