From easy everyday styles to floaty favourites — here’s how to find dresses that fit, flatter, and make you feel fabulous all summer long.

Is there anything better than slipping into a lovely summer dress on a warm day?

I’ve always loved the simplicity of a dress — no need to match top to bottom, just one gorgeous piece and you’re ready for the day. But if you’re petite and over 50, finding summer dresses that actually flatter (and don’t swamp you) can be a bit of a minefield.

So in this post, I’m sharing some of my tried-and-tested tips — as a petite woman myself — for choosing summer dresses that feel breezy, beautiful, and confidence-boosting at any age. Whether you're heading out for lunch with friends, walking the dog in the countryside, or just pottering in the garden, there’s a dress for that.

💡 1. Go for the Right Length

As a general rule, the most flattering lengths for petite women are:

  • Just above the knee

  • On or just below the knee

  • Midi (mid-calf), but not maxi

Maxi dresses can look beautiful, but they often need petite proportions to avoid dragging or overwhelming a smaller frame. If you love a long dress, look for one that’s specifically made for petite sizes — otherwise, you may need to have it shortened or risk tripping over the hem in the co-op car park!

👗 2. Keep the Print in Proportion

A bold floral can be stunning — but if the print is larger than your fist, chances are it’s going to wear you.

For petites, smaller prints, vertical stripes, or solid colours tend to be more flattering. Look for details like a dainty pattern, polka dots, or gentle florals that don’t shout.

✂️ 3. Define Your Waist

When you’re petite, it really helps to define your shape — otherwise you can end up looking like the dress is wearing you.

Look for styles like:

  • Wrap dresses (so flattering and easy to adjust)

  • Belted shirt dresses

  • Fit-and-flare styles that skim over the tummy

And if you fall in love with a dress that’s a bit shapeless, no worries — just add a belt or tie a little denim jacket around your waist to create some definition.

💛 4. Choose Colours That Lift You

As a colour consultant, I have to sneak in a gentle reminder here — the right colour makes all the difference. Wearing a dress in one of your best colours will brighten your skin, make your eyes sparkle, and really boost your confidence.

If you're not sure what colours suit you best, have a peek at my Colour Analysis service — I’d love to help you discover your season!

But for now, a good rule of thumb:

  • Warm-toned women often glow in coral, turquoise, soft peach and cream

  • Cool-toned women shine in soft blues, pinks, lavender, and crisp white

🥿 5. Finish with the Right Shoes

Once you’ve found the perfect dress, don’t forget the shoes! The goal is to keep everything in proportion.

  • A nude or low-contrast sandal (close to your skin tone) helps elongate the leg.

  • Espadrilles or wedge heels add a bit of height without discomfort.

  • Or go casual with a lightweight trainer — especially if you're on your feet a lot.

🛍 A Few Petite-Friendly Brands to Browse

Both in the UK and USA these brands often have petite summer dresses that are worth a look:

The best part about summer dresses? Once you’ve found your style, it’s so easy to just throw one on and go. No faff, no fuss — just comfort, ease, and a bit of joy in the day.

And as always, it’s not about rules — it’s about finding what makes you feel good. So whether that’s a swishy linen number, a fun floral, or a classic shirt dress, trust your instincts and go with what brings a smile.
